Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 17 year old living with his parents and 5 siblings on their prosperous farm in Orange County, NC. He enlisted on 14 May 1861 at Fort Macon, NC and mustered as a Private in Company G, 27 North Carolina Infantry on 31 August.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in the shoulder in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.
The rest of the War
He was promoted Corporal to date from 17 September 1862. He was captured in action on 14 October 1863 at Bristoe Station, VA and held at the Old Capitol Prison, Washington, DC until transferred on 27 October to Point Lookout, MD. He was promoted to Sergeant on 6 August 1864, exchanged on 25 September 1864 at Aiken's Landing, VA, and returned to his unit in December. He was captured again on 6 April 1865 at High Bridge, VA and held at Newport News, VA until he took the Oath of Allegiance on 26 June 1865.
After the War
By 1870 and to at least 1880 he farmed his own place in Little River Township, Orange County, NC. By 1900 he had retired and was living with his dentist son-in-law James McCracken, daughter Grace, and their 2 sons in Durham, NC.
