He enlisted as Private, Company F, 27th North Carolina Infantry on 16 May 1861 in Hertford, NC.
On the Campaign
He was mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was sent to a hospital in Winchester, VA by October and was still absent in a hospital in November 1862. He was listed as "absent wounded" in April 1863 with no later record. He died of wounds, place and date not reported.

Service data from the Roster 1 which says he was killed outright at Sharpsburg. Further details from his Compiled Service Records via fold3 and family genealogists, at least one of whom also says he was killed at Sharpsburg.
He married Caroline B. Smithson (1838-1908) and they had two sons.
