Before Sharpsburg
A 21 year old teacher in Rockbridge County, he mustered as 4th Corporal, Company H, 4th Virginia Infantry on 20 April 1861. He was promoted to First Sergeant on 20 April 1862. He was wounded in action at Malvern Hill, VA on 1 July and at Groveton, VA on 28 August 1862.
On the Campaign
He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was originally buried on the field at Sharpsburg "in H. Reel's field west of his orchard along a stone wall". Probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
