Before Sharpsburg

An unmarried 19 year old farmer in Edgecombe County, he enlisted and mustered at Hertford as Private, Company F, 27th North Carolina Infantry on 16 May 1861.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded by a gunshot in his side in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg and "left in the hands of the enemy."

The rest of the War

He was probably treated at a field hospital near the battlefield and was admitted to a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD on 27 October 1862. He died of wounds there on 27 November. He was originally buried "on west side of and in the [Mt. Olivet] cemetery at Frederick" and possibly reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
