Before Antietam
Age 24, he enlisted in New York City for three years and mustered as Corporal, Company K, 46th New York Infantry on 16 September 1861. He was transferred to Company I by 31 October and was promoted to Sergeant on 8 September 1862.
On the Campaign
He was mortally wounded in the right arm in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
His arm was amputated, probably at a field hospital near Sharpsburg, and he was admitted to a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD on 3 October 1862. He died there of wounds on 21 October 1862.
After the War
He was reinterred from his original burial in Frederick to the new National Cemetery about 1867.

Burial information from the Antietam Cemetery History,1 which, like his gravestone (via Findagrave) has him as Pvt. Emile Mullen. His service from the Adjutant General.2 Wound and hospital details from the Patient List,2 as Emill M. Mueller. His last name is probably best written as Müller.
