In 1860 he was a married 36 year old farmer at Wedowee, Randolph County, AL. He enlisted in Eastville, AL on 6 September 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company E, 13th Alabama Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was with his company in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to 5th Sergeant on 1 December 1863 and was with his company in the field to August 1864, afterward on detail. He was surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
