Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a prosperous 21 year old merchant in the Barnwell District, SC. He enlisted at Summerville, SC, on 20 July 1861 and mustered as 3rd Sergeant of Company K (later A), First South Carolina Infantry. He was elected 3rd Lieutenant (Junior 2nd Lieutenant) at the reorganization of 12 April 1862.
On the Campaign
He was in command of his company at the start of the Campaign.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to (Senior) 2nd Lieutenant by April 1863 and was mortally wounded in action in the Wilderness, VA on 6 May 1864. He died at a hospital in Lynchburg, VA on 16 May 1864.
