John T. Johnston

In 1860 he was a 19 year old shoemaker's son in Luray in Page County, VA. He enlisted there as a Private in Company H, 33rd Virginia Infantry on 1 June 1861. He was home on sick furlough from 16 October through at least February 1862 and absent without leave from 20 May to 4 September.

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

He was absent, sick for most of 1863. He was captured at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 12 May 1864, a prisoner at Fort Delaware by 21 May, and exchanged on 18 September 1864. He was in a Richmond, VA hospital, again sick, on 22 September and furloughed home to Page County for 40 days on 24 September 1864. He was surrendered and paroled at Winchester, VA on 1 June 1865.

He was living in Green Township, Mahoning County, OH by 1874. In 1910 he was a retail florist there, living with his son Walter and wife Pearl.

He married Martha J Rowe (1845-1877) in December 1863 in Page County, and they had 7 children.
