Age 31, from Charleston, he enlisted there as Private, Company D, 23rd South Carolina Infantry on 29 October 1861.

On the Campaign

He was "severely" wounded in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was back with his Company by January 1863 and was with them until he was captured at Petersburg, VA in March 1865 and held in Washington, DC and at Point Lookout, MD. He was released in May.
