Born in Tennessee, he was living with his family in Leake County, MS by age 7. By then a 17 year old clerk, he enlisted as Private, Company G, 18th Mississippi Infantry on 29 April 1861 in Camden, MS.

He was mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds at Charles Town, VA on 20 September 1862.
