William S. Townsend

From Bloomesburg, he enlisted at Hughesville as Private, Company G, 106th Pennsylvania Infantry on 4 March and mustered in at Harrisburg on 8 April 1862.

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862, but probably remained with his Company.

He was sick in the Regimental hospital in October 1863 and on recruiting duty at Germantown near Philadelphia in January and February 1864. He was wounded again, mortally, by gunshot to the right shoulder at the Wilderness, VA on 6 May 1864. He was initially treated at the 2nd Division/2nd Army Corps field hospital, sent to Harewood US Army General Hospital (GH) in Washington, DC on 11 May, and admitted to the Mower US Army GH in Philadelphia on 15 May. He died of pyaemia (infection) there on 30 or 31 May 1864.

He married Catherine Hileman (1840-1887) about 1860 and they had a daughter, Hanna Elizabeth (1861-1920).
