He enlisted in Company D, 18th Mississippi Infantry on about 1 June 1861 and was appointed Sergeant, date not given.
On the Campaign
He was severely wounded by gunshot to his right elbow in action at Sharpsburg on 17 (or 18) September 1862, and captured.
The rest of the War
A Federal surgeon removed part of his ulna (forearm bone), he was treated at a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD from 15 to 28 November 1862, then transferred to Baltimore, probably Ft. McHenry, for exchange. He was discharged for wounds on 19 December 1862.
