A 22 year old carpenter in Appomattox County, he mustered as Private, Company H, 18th Virginia Infantry on 7 May 1861. He was promoted to Corporal on 15 July then reduced to Private on 2 December 1861. He was appointed Sergeant on 15 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
