Before Antietam
Age 29, he enlisted at New York City to serve three years, and mustered in as Private, Company H, 69th New York Infantry on 19 August 1862.
On the Campaign
He was slightly wounded in the arm in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He transferred to Company A on 12 June 1863. He was wounded again, in action at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863. He transferred to Company F in January or February 1864. He was captured in action at Ream's Station, VA on 25 August 1864. He was held as a prisoner of war, but escaped on 28 April 1865. He mustered out with a detachment of the regiment on 5 June 1865 near Alexandria, VA.
