Before Antietam
His father Matthew (b.c. 1800) drowned in 1851, and he, his mother, and his brother Daniel emigrated from County Kilkenny to New York. Age 19, he enlisted in New York City to serve three years, and mustered in as Private, Company C, 69th New York Infantry on 20 September 1861.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in the right knee in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He transferred to Company B, date not given. His leg was amputated above the knee due to necrosis on 24 November 1862 by Surgeon Henry S. Hewit at US General Hospital #5 in Frederick, MD. He was discharged for wounds at New York City on 22 (or 24) April 1863.
