Before Sharpsburg
He enlisted in Company A, 3rd South Carolina Infantry Battalion on 5 December 1861 at Columbia, SC at about age 17. He was detached to man a battery at Pineberry Point, Edisto Island, SC in February 1862.
On the Campaign
He was captured in action at Fox's Gap, on 14 September 1862, and served as a litter bearer there.
The rest of the War
Held at Fort Delaware, he was sent to Aikens Landing, VA and exchanged on 2 October 1862. Again captured, at Falling Waters, MD on the retreat from Gettysburg on 12 July 1863. He was in the Baltimore City Jail, then Point Lookout, MD, where he was paroled and exchanged on 13 February 1865.
