Before Sharpsburg
He enlisted in Company E, 3rd South Carolina Infantry Battalion on 2 January 1862 at Columbia, SC at age 18.
On the Campaign
He was wounded severely in the left arm and captured in action at Fox's Gap on 14 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was treated at the General Hospital #1, Boonsboro, MD and US General Hospital #5 at Frederick, MD, where his left arm was amputated at the shoulder joint. He was sent to Fort McHenry 28 November, and on to Fortress Monroe, VA on 8 December 1862, where he was exchanged. He was in the General Hospital, Petersburg, VA and furloughed home 19 December. He was discharged 17 March 1863.
