Before Sharpsburg
He enlisted in Company D, 3rd South Carolina Infantry Battalion on 1 December 1861 at Columbia, SC at about age 17.
On the Campaign
He was wounded and captured in action at Fox's Gap on 14 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was held at Fort McHenry, then sent to Fortress Monroe, VA and exchanged, date not given. He was furloughed home 15 November and back with his Company by January 1863. He was slightly wounded in the side in action at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863 and captured there. He was in a Federal Hospital at Gettysburg, then transferred to DeCamp General Hospital, Devil's Island, New York Harbor on 8 July. He was paroled at Camp Lee, VA on 16 September 1863. He was again wounded, severely, in the "middle third of his left thigh" in action in the Wilderness, VA on 6 May 1864. He was in Virginia and North Carolina hospitals until able to return on 10 July 1864. He was paroled at Greensboro, NC on 2 May 1865 as Private, Company E, 3rd South Carolina Infantry Regiment.
