William H. Burns

From Beaver Dam, he enlisted in Company A, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry on 18 April 1861. He was appointed Sergeant (date not given).

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

Discharged 24 October 1861 to enlist in the Regular Army. He served in Company C, 6th US Cavalry.

He was admitted to the Northwestern Branch Soldiers' Home (Milwaukee, WI) in about 1883. He was a pallbearer at Gen. Charles S. Hamilton's (original commander of the 3rd Wisconsin) funeral in Milwaukee in 1891. He was listed as living at the Poverty Island Light House, Fayette, MI at time of the 1892 Regimental Reunion. His veteran's pension was increased to $30 per month in 1906 (joint resolution, 59th US Congress).
