Before Antietam

He enrolled as First Lieutenant, Company D, 155th Pennsylvania Infantry on 2 September 1862. Noted for his expertise in the Zouave drill.

The rest of the War

Promoted to Captain on December 15, 1862. He was honored by brevet to Major for action at Peebles' Farm, VA on 30 September 1864, where he was wounded. Discharged March 10, 1865, for wounds received at Peebles' Farm

After the War

He was later Colonel of the 14th Regiment, PA National Guard. Also Superintendent of City Markets, Pittsburg and in the Department of Public Safety there.
