Before Antietam
He enlisted as Sergeant in Company B, 155th Pennsylvania Infantry on 23 August 1862.
The rest of the War
He saw action at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Mine Run. He was captured in action in the Wilderness, VA on 5 May 1864. He was a prisoner at Andersonville, GA. Very ill, he was exchanged and returned by boat from Savannah, GA to Annapolis, MD on 10 March 1865. He died in the Naval Hospital there on 18 March. He was buried at the Hospital Cemetery, and later was returned home and buried in Uniondale Cemetery, Allegheny City (now North Side, Pittsburgh).
