Confederate (CSV)

Captain

James McDonald Campbell

(c. 1831 - 1864)

Home State: Alabama

Branch of Service: Infantry

Unit: 47th Alabama Infantry

Before Sharpsburg

A minister from Cherokee County1, he organized and was first Captain of Company E of the 47th Alabama Infantry on their organization at Cedar Bluff, AL on 30 April 1862. He was wounded at Cedar Run, VA on 9 August 1862,2 but was (probably) back with the regiment by Sharpsburg in September.

On the Campaign

Major Campbell was (probably) in command of the Regiment as senior officer present after Colonel Jackson assumed command of the Brigade in relief of Colonel Warren at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862. Lieutenant Colonel Bulger was then absent on furlough.

The rest of the War

He was still in command of the regiment to at least 3 October 1862, and was appointed Major on 17 March 1863 to date from 13 September 1862 (or 23 August3). He commanded the regiment again, at Gettysburg in July, after Colonel Jackson and Lt. Colonel Bulger were wounded and captured, respectively.4 He was killed in action - shot through the head - at or near Spotsylvania Courthouse on the Wilderness Campaign on 8 (or 14) May 1864.5
